Rainforest Refugee Camp (RRC) Returns as the Playa's "premier" relief station where over heated Participants from lands graced with lower temperatures and higher humidity can seek Refuge and ask for asylum from the harsh treatment they are enduring on the Playa.  The entrance of the RRC has an overhead misting system giving the appearance of mist covered forests and clouds. .  Passports or bodies  will be stamped with our blessings. RRC is a "Clothing Optional Camp"

2007 camp layout

3D Perspective of the Street side
from the windy side

general layout of camp
Olive Green is  the face paint and  Shark art car.
Purple is silver shade street  performance group
Dark Green is the main shade with steel dome inside
Red is Kitchen  generator and fuel  storage
Green is  RV with Generator
light blue is  box truck Team Pandora
Brown is long dorm tents
Yellow is small trailer and cars

Other types of shade:
tent shade

Our tight tent and RV plans keep the wind and dust out of the small tents
Note changes in design 2004 from:
We will have 2  Alder flag poles..
NO Post holes in the playa.  (Playa field tests have proven no need to dig holes for this structure)

The main shade has  a  steel  geodesic dome in the center a 64'  vented parachute that also covers 3 yurts

W.W.II and newer Camouflage netting covers the sides  of the main shade structure.

The structure is designed to flex in the wind.  the outer ring of suspension ropes will be the 5/8" nylon rope.  the "green" web lines may be lighter 3/8" nylon rope.   The entire suspension roof will experience stretching and snug lines and take up lines will be easy to get to and tighten as the week  progresses.  Extra airline cable will be available to beef up problem area should they appear.  Parachutes have be vented to let rushing air leave safely.  Designs have taken into account updrafts, down drafts. gusts , sustained winds of 35 mph and  dust devil  hits.

Silver shade dorm tents - designed by a structural engineer proven to be a fantastic structure last year is being replicated into a second silver shade.  inside houses 6 to 8 smaller tents and  has a center common area for community stuff. *like eating.

TEXAN LONG TENTS-  tested twice on the playa this long quansa huts of burners without borders design are absolutely the home on the range sleeping structures.  wind resistant, flexible pvc construction. these long tents hold out the dust and provide protection for some of the other smaller tents next to them.

We hope to have the Entrance face East and North.   The back of the structure faces South and West to break the more forceful winds from the SW

The Tent will be turn 1/8 of a turn so that the entrance will be at the "|>" on the street and on each side of the pickup at the back

All guy ropes will be either inside the structure or covered with Shade cloth

Hours of operation will be between 10 am and 5 pm (later if daytime temps are high)

Front  this is sort of what it may look like.   Last year because of camp placement this door faced the prevailing winds and could not be opened so we made the door under the "|>" braces to the right of the drawing.

The plan for this year 2007 is to have two orange and white   |>  |>  flag poles with a banner with our name on it (signage) between the two poles.   have shade cloth walls covering the guy wires for the poles on each side forming a "tunnel entrance"

this will allow us to gate off access when closed and make for a nicer environment inside. the main shade.

We will be having interactions (entertainment/partisipation) on the street with those passing by.  there will be face painting booth near the front  .. Inside the main shade the ground is completely covered with blue tarp and blankets are then laid over the tarp as carpet..(very cool and fun to walk on with bare feet)   The misting area is located near the front entry off to a side this is to keep mud to a minimum .  we tarp under the mister and have rugs over the tarp to pick up excess water.  This is hugely important because this area works as a swamp cooler to chill the rest of the main shade.  we don't want to lose any water by seepage into the playa..   off around the inside of the main shade has area's almost like store fronts where members can sit, work on projects, chit chat, do nails or watch "Theater of the Moment (TOTM)"  a theater  of the round that has access to the costume yurt located under the shade tarp.

in the middle of the main shade is a steel geodesic dome that forms the center support.  it also is the Hammock area and "Snuggle Puddle"  an area  of extra blankets and pillows and plush toys. A very nice cuddle area to hang out in.

----------

Most of our membership does not do well in the heat, so we will be camped out under the shade all day lounging around like over heated puppies and kitties.  Think Sloth.

New for 2006   a Chuck Wagon Kitchen area (members only)

                 Side                                                                                                                        End

trailer

This Chuck Wagon Kitchen will allow 3 people to prepare and cook meals at the same time.
(yes a little cramped but it is 4x the space we have had in the past)

there will be blue tarp covering the ground and a mesh nursery cloth over the top.
I have skirting material to keep the wind from blowing Playa dust up from under the trailer.
(3) Coleman and Propane camp stoves, (1) 2,000 Btu crab cooker to boil water for noodles
(2) 5 gal  tanks of propane, figure on 1 gal of white gas and 10 small bottles of propane.

We have fire extinguishers this year at both ends of the trailer.

Note: this trailer is getting modified again.  better suspension a canapé that jacks up...

Fuel Storage will be a covered  area (shaded).  in front of the Beast  about  30' from any open flame of the cooking area.

Fire protection

There are no fire pits, no art burning, no Tiki torches.  Fire protection = 45 gal of water with a 60psi
12 volt battery powered pump range 15 feet from end of hose.  RRC has the equivalent of internal fire protection sprinkler system...with the rain making / mist system.   RRC for the most part is a large swamp cooler.  In addition there is a portable 2 gal water hand pump to put out small spot fires.

cooking is our major flame issue and with the tow in kitchen  we have isolated the chances of fire spreading.

There will be (2) pressurized fire extinguisher  this year due to the extra fuel in camp.

We will have a 3 Gas generators (small)  and 5 gal of gas to run it. sound proofing is in the works it ...
I doubt we will be running it more than 1 hour a day, to charge batteries.  I doubt that  we will run more than one generator at a time.

We will have in camp 2 to 3  5 gal propane tanks for cooking,   10 qt bottles of propane for cooking and camp lamps.  1 gal of white Gas for Coleman cook stoves (2)

So far we have (2) Coleman camp stove, (1) butane camp stove (1) propane crab cooker for boiling water.  the new folding stove table is now Complete (and very cool)  This year we have a 10" WOK  very cool!

Sound: 200 WATT Stereo, 4 Mackie Box Speakers Channeled to
Stereo, 12V System.  Plug and Play anything that
accepts 3.5mm jack.  (we have 2 of these systems in camp)  run time 10am to about 10pm.. tests show self limiting because the batteries go dead quickly as the playa cools off. (oh well)

Alternative lighting to reduce fire hazard:
6-10 Fluorescent Lanterns 12V and 6V.

Dozens of Multi Colored Flashing and Non Flashing
lights.

Solar Panels up to 5AMPs per Day Light Hour.  1.5V to
12V.
IF wired properly and used sparingly we have
400 AMP Hours 12V & 6V.

Leave no trace plans..  There are no post holes need to stabilize the structure  the soil will not be removed.  We are very pleased with the playa friendly design of all our structures.  After the tent is removed the rebar holes will be refilled tamped and watered to fuse back  any divots in the playa.   Any spots where cars or trucks are parked will be check for oil or fluids leaks and those soils removed and sacked.  any left over playa dirt will be used to fill these spots and watered.

Misting systems are designed to be used over areas that have Blue tarps laid down first and then carpet laid over the top.. so no water collection will form in the playa surface.

NOTE CHANGE: modification to utility trailer.  in 2004 the empty wooden trailer with 3 side walls was an effective dehydrator for melon peels and other kitchen waste, (2005 we put in new Spruce Wood Decking),  in 3 hours fruits and leftovers were converted to small leathery items,   The Rack on the trailer tongue proved to be an outstanding dehydrator SUCCESS!!!!

the Trailer this year will have attachable fold down counter space.  We have some hygiene safety  washes this year it will be a 3 tub system .. sterile, wash , rinse.

Hygiene water (gray water) will be collected, evaporated and the concentrate (if any) should be a pasty residue that will be placed in a zip lock bag and sealed in empty 5 gal buckets  to be disposed of in a land fill.

SUCCESS!!!! :
We are now a  proud owner of a 12 volt pump powered gray water evaporator

Leave No Trace Program
6 years on the playa no moop left behind

Trash - M.O.O.P.   each end of the shade structure has a garbage sack tied to the door post. when a sack is half full it is taken down, compressed by standing on it to remove excess air Tied and placed in the utility trailer.  A new empty garbage sack is then tied to that door post.   As a camp we do morning MOOP runs returning from any location on the playa esp from the sanacans.  this makes certain our street is clean, it is a great way to meet the neighbors, when we pick up trash on their front door,.   Over the years we have found absolutely great stuff walking back from the outer fences of BRC.   Members are told that if they just pick up the stuff that is right in front of them any of the really cool Moop is a gift to them from the universe..  Works great!.  Each member averages about 10 hours of MOOP pick up over the course of the entire week.

2006  the best year yet.. SUCCESS!!!! : NO MOOP FOUND ON FINAL WALK THOUGH!!!  YAAAAAAAH   We were larger and had more folks and still left the space clean!   Job Well done!

Kitchen water
is first screen with a fairly large holed sieve to remove the big chunks.. then evaporated down to a sticky residue that goes into a plastic lined 5 gal bucket.  then left in the shade to be sealed and packed to a land fill after the event.  (this needs work we think we have a better system with a separate evaporation and screening with nursery cloth.

Shower gray water
We don't have much of a shower system.. a one gal solar shower bag on the top of the BEAST (Pickup truck)  a shallow Mortar mixing plastic pan to catch the water.  We have found that showering with a friend is much more fun and efficient.  The gray water is evaporated to a thick slurry and add to the Kitchen water residue bucket. Modifications of the shower system in the works is a misting shower pumper sprayer, heat about a QT of water on the stove dump it into the sprayer and  shower.. should be less gray water.. once again.. shower with a friend is much more fun and uses less water.

Member camping will be in behind the main tent with cars and trucks forming a protective ring to the West- South West.  We expect to have  30-45cars/pickups/vans (70-75 members)

Refugee Adoption Program:  All refugees have to clear through Me (Omyg).  We will do what we can to place your tent next to RRC members you know.  If you are new to the group don't feel bad we have 10 newbies signed up already and each year we gain 15 to 20 more folks.  e-mail me to get onto the "RRC NEWS" mark@snursery.com   to join type: "PUT ME ON THE LIST" in the subject line. Then write down a little bit about yourself and what you want to do at Burning  Man!

By mid week we usually adopt 2 to 4 groups of newbies to the Refugee camp.  this fills in the extra open space and  helps the new folks get the hang of desert camping the need to follow the LNT rules.

We are Playa virgin friendly with out new members things would get rather stale and routine.  New folks brings new ideas and creativity and a whole new batch of topics to talk about..

For the folks at BMORG.. what ever space you give us we will pack it wall to wall tight , as we always do.. (check your aerial photo's)

See all of you On the Playa!
