Rainforest Refugee Camp (RRC) Returns as the Playa's "premier" relief station where over heated Participants from lands graced with lower temperatures and higher humidity can seek Refuge and ask for asylum from the harsh treatment they are enduring on the Playa.  The entrance of the RRC has an overhead misting system giving the appearance of mist covered forests and clouds. .  Passports or bodies  will be stamped with our blessings. RRC is a "Clothing Optional Camp"

More info  These are our first sketches of the main tent structure.

3D Perspective of the Street side  enter on the near point under the '/\"  arches
from the windy side

Foot print 30'  x 30' including cable anchors. Tent floor is 20' x 20'
I'm working on the hammock supports last year (2005) we got 2 hammocks up
It would be nice to be able to suspend 5 hammocks.
end panels are 80% shade cloth  several layers 2 or three as needed.
Main cover is Camo netting , an inner roof   ( I have some shredding parachute material to suspend inside to look like moss and help block some the suns rays.  I took a hard look at what caused the structure failure 2003 and one was the cable clamps letting loose and the other was the amount of force the parachute catching wind toppling things over.)

Other types of shade:
tent shade
Note changes in design 2004 from:
We will have the same number of  Alder flag poles.. but will be guy wiring them in place rather then use the "/\"
NO Post holes in the playa.  (Playa field tests have proven no need to dig holes for this structure)

There will be (3) 14' "|>" braces corners with cross hoop rebar driven into the playa

"|>" braces are located at the corners to give rigidity to the structure.  Aircraft cable anchors to "candy cane" re-bar dead men driven 1 1/2' into the playa.  the bottom of the "|>"  will be in  4" deep divots 4" round

The entire roof is created by simple suspension ropes from each outside "|>" brace to an inner 12' tall tripod in the center  W.W.II and newer Camouflage netting covers the top of the structure.

The structure is designed to flex in the wind.  the outer ring of suspension ropes will be the 5/8" nylon rope.  the "green" web lines may be lighter 3/8" nylon rope.   The entire suspension roof will experience stretching and snug lines and take up lines will be easy to get to and tighten as the week  progresses.  Extra airline cable will be available to beef up problem area should they appear.

Main entrances (2) face East and North.   The back of the structure faces South and West to break the more forceful winds from the SW

The Tent will be turn 1/8 of a turn so that the entrance will be at the "|>" on the street and on each side of the pickup at the back

All guy ropes will be either inside the structure or covered with Shade cloth

Hours of operation will be between 12 am and 5 pm (later if daytime temps are high)

Front  this is sort of what it may look like.   Last year because of camp placement this door faced the prevailing winds and could not be opened so we made the door under the "|>" braces to the right of the drawing

New for 2006   a Chuck Wagon Kitchen area (members only)

                 Side                                                                                                                        End

trailer

This Chuck Wagon Kitchen will allow 3 people to prepare and cook meals at the same time.
(yes a little cramped but it is 4x the space we have had in the past)

there will be blue tarp covering the ground and a mesh nursery cloth over the top.
I have skirting material to keep the wind from blowing Playa dust up from under the trailer.
(3) Coleman and Propane camp stoves, (1) 2,000 Btu crab cooker to boil water for noodles
(2) 5 gal  tanks of propane, figure on 1 gal of white gas and 10 small bottles of propane.

We have fire extinguishers this year at both ends of the trailer.

Fuel Storage will be a covered  area (shaded).  in front of the Beast  about  30' from any open flame of the cooking area.

Fire protection

There are no fire pits, no art burning, no Tiki torches.  Fire protection = 45 gal of water with a 60psi
12 volt battery powered pump range 15 feet from end of hose.  RRC has the equivalent of internal fire protection sprinkler system...with the rain making / mist system.   RRC for the most part is a large swamp cooler.  In addition there is a portable 2 gal water hand pump to put out small spot fires.

There will be (2) pressurized fire extinguisher  this year due to the extra fuel in camp.

We will have a Gas generator (small)  and 5 gal of gas to run it. sound proofing is in the works it is located inside the chuck wagon trailer!...
I doubt we will be running it more than 3 hours a day, to charge batteries.

We will have in camp 2 to 3  5 gal propane tanks for cooking,   10 qt bottles of propane for cooking and camp lamps.  1 gal of white Gas for Coleman cook stoves (2)

So far we have (2) Coleman camp stove, (1) propane camp stove (1) propane crab cooker for boiling water.  the new folding stove table is now Complete (and very cool)  This year we have a 10" WOK  very cool!

Leave no trace plans..  There are no post holes need to stabilize the structure  the soil will not be removed.  We are very pleased with the playa friendly design of this new structure.  After the tent is removed the rebar holes will be refilled tamped and watered to fuse back  any divots in the playa.   Any spots where cars or trucks are parked will be check for oil or fluids leaks and those soils removed and sacked.  any left over playa dirt will be used to fill these spots and watered.

Misting systems are designed to be used over areas that have Blue tarps laid down first and then carpet laid over the top.. so no water collection will form in the playa surface.

NOTE CHANGE: modification to utility trailer.  in 2004 the empty wooden trailer with 3 side walls was an effective dehydrator for melon peels and other kitchen waste, (2005 we put in new Spruce Wood Decking),  in 3 hours fruits and leftovers were converted to small leathery items,   The Rack on the trailer tongue proved to be an outstanding dehydrator SUCCESS!!!!

the Trailer this year will have attachable fold down counter space.  We have some hygiene safety  washes this year it will be a 3 tub system .. sterile, wash , rinse.

Hygiene water (gray water) will be collected, evaporated and the concentrate (if any) should be a pasty residue that will be placed in a zip lock bag and sealed in empty 5 gal buckets  to be disposed of in a land fill.
We are going back to the 4' x 3' x 2" black plastic gray water evaporation "wading pool" .  (simple low tech, efficient.)

SUCCESS!!!! : standard gray water evaporation shallow pool..   but!    with a twist..
nursery cloth
will run over the shower block and out into the gray water pool.
this does two things:
         1) screen out large particles
         2) increases surface area for evaporation
         3) provides a wicking action to evaporate more water

Trash - M.O.O.P.   each end of the shade structure has a garbage sack tied to the door post. when a sack is half full it is taken down, compressed by standing on it to remove excess air Tied and placed in the utility trailer.  A new empty garbage sack is then tied to that door post.   As a camp we do morning MOOP runs returning from any location on the playa esp from the sanacans.  this makes certain our street is clean, it is a great way to meet the neighbors, when we pick up trash on their front door,.   Over the years we have found absolutely great stuff walking back from the outer fences of BRC.   Members are told that if they just pick up the stuff that is right in front of them any of the really cool Moop is a gift to them from the universe..  Works great!.  Each member averages about 10 hours of MOOP pick up over the course of the entire week.

2005  the best year yet.. SUCCESS!!!! : NO MOOP FOUND ON FINAL WALK THOUGH!!!  YAAAAAAAH

Kitchen water
is first screen with a fairly large holed sieve to remove the big chunks.. then evaporated down to a sticky residue that goes into a plastic lined 5 gal bucket.  then left in the shade to be sealed and packed to a land fill after the event.  (this needs work we think we have a better system with a separate evaporation and screening with nursery cloth.  So far we have several suggestions including an interesting idea of  a hanging sausage drip evaporation sock.. might work!

Shower gray water
We don't have much of a shower system.. a one gal solar shower bag on the top of the BEAST (Pickup truck)  a shallow Mortar mixing plastic pan to catch the water.  We have found that showering with a friend is much more fun and efficient.  The gray water is evaporated to a thick slurry and add to the Kitchen water residue bucket. Modifications of the shower system in the works is a misting shower pumper sprayer, heat about a QT of water on the stove dump it into the sprayer and  shower.. should be less gray water.. once again.. shower with a friend is much more fun and uses less water.

Member camping will be in behind the main tent with cars and trucks forming a protective ring to the West- South West.  We expect to have  14 to 18 cars/pickups/vans (35-40 members)

Poles will be cut for the "|>" as soon as the weather warms up
